Disability

Georgia Tech offers disability insurance benefits for eligible employees to supplement their income if they require time away from work due to a non-occupational injury or illness or maternity leave. Georgia Tech's Long-Term Disability plan does coordinate with workers compensation.

Eligibility and Effective Date of Coverage

Regular, full-time/part-time faculty or staff who work at least 30 hours per week are eligible for disability coverage on the first day of the month following enrollment in the plan.

Disability Plans

Georgia Tech offers Short-Term Disability (STD) and Long-Term Disability (LTD) by MetLife. Once you are rendered disabled by a medical doctor and complete a 14 day waiting period, STD insurance pays 60 percent of your salary up to a maximum of $2,500 per week up to 11 weeks.

For LTD insurance, you must be rendered disabled by a medical doctor and complete a 90 waiting period, LTD insurance pays 60% of your salary up to a maximum of $15,000 per month.

Cost

The cost of disability insurance is paid for entirely by the employee on an after-tax basis.

An employee's monthly cost for MetLife STD is $.291/$10 of covered benefit.

An employee's monthly cost for MetLife LTD is $.224/$100 of covered benefit.

Academic Prepayments

Since January 1, 2000 employees on an academic pay cycle have a new deduction schedule which prorates the summer insurance premiums over the last five paychecks of the academic year (January-May). This new deduction schedule was implemented to avoid having to make a triple deduction in the May paycheck to cover benefit premiums over the summer. The advance deductions for summer paychecks to cover benefit premiums is listed separately on the paycheck, and is equal to an additional 40% of the regular monthly deduction for medical, dental, dependent life and supplemental life.
