COBRA

COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act) is a Federal law that allows employees and dependents the opportunity to temporarily continue healthcare coverage in certain instances where otherwise the coverage would end. Dependents are eligible for COBRA coverage only if they were covered on the plan the day before the event occurred. Coverage is identical to the health coverage carried by active employers.

Ceridian Benefits Services administers COBRA benefits for Georgia Tech. When you or your dependents experience an event that leads to the termination of benefits (i.e., regular to temporary or dependent is no longer a full-time student), Ceridian will send a package of information describing the length of COBRA eligibility and the enrollment application. The application for COBRA must be submitted to Ceridian within the 60-day application period. Coverage must be continuous, so premiums will be assessed for the 60-day application period.

Under Federal regulations, continuants are responsible for 100 percent of the total premium, plus a 2 percent administrative fee unless you are eligible for a subsidy under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Ceridian isGeorgia Tech's COBRA administrator. Employees that are offered COBRA coverage have 60 days to make a COBRA election and 45 days to submit payment to Ceridian after the election is made. Ceridian's telephone number is 1-800-877-7994.
